Bio
Sappho was born and raised in the nerdery. Fed a steady diet of prog-rock and musical factoids, it’s no wonder that she is a consummate record collector. She began their journey into the world of techno & house music in 1991 when she attended her first rave in Dallas, TX with the most excellent Deee-Lite as the showstoppers. From that moment on, Sappho was hooked. Throughout the 1990s, you could usually find her scouring record bins looking for gems and in front of the speakers at events from Portland to Vancouver BC. Armed with her music collection, in 1999, Sappho made the jump from dancing party-goer to DJ. Sappho played alongside such international artist as Green Velvet, Soul Clap, Tiger & Woods, Slow Hands, Leon Vynehall, Peanut Butter Wolf, Isolee, Matthew Dear, Toshaya Kawaska, Robert Yang of Honey Soundsystem and Ambrosia Salad. She’s a vinyl lover that always brings her love of forward thinking music and community to the dance floor. Currently she is throws and djs for the Portland parties Stranger Disco, Yes Please and Playground.

DJ-Apt-One-B40

Philadelphia has always been a hotbed of soul, funk and disco artists. Some of the most notables being The Trammps, Gamble & Huff and McFadden & Whitehead. DJ Apt One is yet another artist from Philly who will soon be ranked up there with the more recognizable names.

DJ Apt One first came to our attention as a contributor to one of the more popular music blogs Dollar Bin Jams. We had the luxury of hosting him in Seattle at JACK at Seattle Eagle this past summer. We then coaxed him into making an exclusive mix for Bottom Forty which you can check out right here!

Exclusive Mix 036: A Digital Needle

BeamMeUp1

Have you ever wanted to teleport to another city and check out a couple DJs or a club night only because of what you’ve heard? Take for example, A Digital Needle (ADN), Dylan and John are the two masterminds who make ADN the recognizable team that they are. I have come to find that both their musical selection and sound quality is exceptional. Their edits are indeed something to look forward to and covet. So if I had teleport capabilities I would put “Beam Me Up” on the top of that list. First stop, Toronto, Ontario.

Originally from Sydney and currently based in San Francisco, Goodyear has been headlining the world’s highest-profile clubs and parties for over 25 years. His style encapsulates an incredible range. During his sets he combines tech house, latin beats, dynamic disco and soulful house to create a signature style all his own. With many artists struggling to stay relevant as musical trends come and go and technology changes the playing field, Paul has shown a remarkable gift for not just staying abreast of these trends, but for contributing to them and shaping them himself.

Freda Payne – Savin’ It!

Written by
May 27, 2014
Freda Payne Hot

Freda Payne Hot

Freda Payne’s LP Hot was released in 1979 on Capitol records, produced by John Florez & Dr. Cecil Hale.
Savin It! is an ode to love in a save and spend culture of the 1970’s when the country was in a recession.
Although Ms. Payne is probably best known for her hit “Band of Gold” she has recorded an infinite amount over her career, always embracing her Jazz, R&B and Pop roots.

Unhooked_Generation_The_Complete_Invictus_Recordings_cover

“Unhooked Generation: The Complete Invictus Recordings’ is a must, every single recording that Freda Payne did for Invictus is here including “You Brought Me Joy” and “Deeper and Deeper” and an alternate version of “Band Of Gold”.

Freda is also the older sister of former Supreme Scherrie Payne. This download is a vinyl rip offered up by Sounds of the 70’s Blogspot, check em’ out. Enjoy!

“Don’t Wish Too Hard”

Written by
May 18, 2014
Peter Allen

Peter Allen

Peter Allen will always be imprinted in my mind as the flamboyant piano playing guy I saw on everybody’s variety shows in the 1970’s. Certainly recalling his marriage to Liza Minnelli as one of those what were they thinking moments? Peter and Liza

Wow, this is the perfect summer disco record and how could you lose with the co-writing talents of Mr. Allen and Carole Bayer Sager and produced by Mike Post who wrote so many TV theme songs that there are too many to list here.

This extended edit is executed beautifully by Betty Aus hailing from Australia. I have been following Betty for a little over a year now and am always pleasantly surprised with both selection and re-edits. Enjoy!
