Bottom Forty

Bottom Forty is a mirror ball in New York, a basement in Chicago, a cruise in L.A. and a night in the desert.

If you missed it…I’m sorry. It was really, really good. Elite Force smashed it and Rhines in came in with acid to dissolve the pieces.

spaceotter’s playa report (Burning Man 2013)

September 13, 2013

1173634_10200507764644653_120441661_nI’ve been on mute for a minute from Bottom Forty…for little other reason than my hair has been on fire. For those who don’t already know, I’m a founding member of a mixed-gender and -orientation Burning Man theme camp by the name of Conception, which has grown to be one of the larger sound & arts camps from the Pacific Northwest on the playa. This year, I was the logistics lead/CEO (“Chief Executive Otter”), as well as music co-chair, treasurer, and communications lead (playfully dubbed “Lt. Uhora”) for a camp of 50 people from 8 states and 4 countries. Our extended tribe of over a hundred campers over the years remains connected, some of whom took the year off or have drifted off to form their own camps and projects. As such, August is the peak of my year, and I find myself working and planning and communicating most days and nights until I desperately need a drink but it’s already 4 hours after my bedtime and I just drop from exhaustion instead. read more …

Bert & Chewy, live at XenoConception 2011

Written by

‘Twas a gorgeous night on the playa in 2011, and our first year as Burning Man theme camp “Conception.” For those who don’t know already, Conception is a Seattle-based sound and arts camp, which I co-founded with some friends to bring our own northwest brand of love and psychedelia. I had asked Seattle techno visionary and Re-Bar co-owner Michael Manahan if he would play our big XenoConception (“conception with aliens”) party at Burning Man, but he was working on Bumbershoot and unable to make it to the playa that year. “However,” he said, “I have the perfect people to play.”

I hadn’t met Bert & Chewy (aka Rob Noble and Zacharia when they play drum & bass) before, but when Manahan says someone’s good, I listen. So, I booked them for the closing set with a bill of other techno-focused acts, including PG Tomasi and DJ Tatar from San Francisco camp Want It! read more …

Vancouver Night Out & DJ Matt Stands’ “LIQUID” mix

The B40 crew is traveling a lot lately! Last weekend, I had the pleasure of joining friends in Vancouver BC for a long overdue visit, and we hit up some of the bigger dance venues they had been glowing about. Primary among these was Space Five Sixty for Vancouver’s edition of Bearracuda, which has become the largest of the Bearracuda party franchise, serving bears and their friends dance beats. As expected, the crowd was a sea of beards and furry chests, and the space was gorgeous and multilevel with amazing projections and solid sound. Just as the party was warming up with local support from Jay Douglas, word came through that Chicago “chunk house” headliner Ted Eiel had been turned away at the Canadian border. Ouch.

So imagine our surprise when our dear friend DJ Matt Stands from Seattle took the headlining slot in his place. Matt is a Seattle resident DJ at the Cuff, BarMyx Everett, the west coast Bearracuda and Strapped parties, and my musical co-conspirator from the basement raves that eventually evolved into Burning Man Camp Conception. A true professional, Matt took the last minute phone call, packed the car, drove up and saved the party like a DJ superhero.

Otterotation: Lee Burridge at Robot Heart, Burning Man 2011

Robot Heart is my favorite deep techno roving art car on the playa at Burning Man, or pretty much anywhere. Hosting techno talent on the playa each year all week on their speaker-lined bus, their deep playa sunrise parties are the stuff of legend. In 2011, when my theme camp Conception took Flammable resident Karl Kamakahi to the playa for the first time, he returned Saturday morning around 10 am, dusty and wide eyed with wonder from an all night dance bender. When asked, he reported that Lee Burridge‘s sunrise set had just changed his life and was the most excited he’d been about music since he started DJing twenty years before. “One of the top memories of my life with the sound and the sun blending together as it rose over the ridge and on to the playa … Fucking AMAZING !!!” Burridge is a London DJ and playa superstar, and has recently released a remastered version of this 2011 set, which has become implanted in my phone as if it’s now in charge of the thing. read more …
