Sergio Fedasz has become something of a San Francisco institution since starting his out-of-control Go BANG! more than four years ago with his friends. Presently, the current Resident roster at Go BANG! is Legendary, Fabulous Steve Fabus & Sergio! He started DJing at KALX 90.7, the Bay Area’s best and most storied radio station, at the end of last century (1997 to be exact), and in 2010 was voted San Francisco’s best DJ by readers of SF Weekly. He creates amazing edits of vintage disco tracks with Allen Craig as The SyntheTigers, and they have begun producing original house music (with disco flourishes) released on San Francisco’s Moulton Music, a label which redefined and established the San Francisco Sound in the early 00s and has never stopped releasing quality house music! Sergio is also a recurring guest at Robin Malone Simmons’ Odyssey affairs, DJs at Cafe Flore in The Castro, DJs regularly on KALX, and can be found DJing throughout the Bay Area at myriad club events.

Born & raised in the East Bay, and having moved to San Francisco in 2001, Sergio is proud of the San Francisco Bay Area’s rich dance music past and especially focuses on keeping our City’s traditions & history alive. His DJing style draws inspiration from legendary Chicago DJ & producer Derrick Carter, San Francisco legend and party partner Steve Fabus, and the one & only Larry Levan. Especially after reading “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” in 2000, his ‘musical vision’ has crystallized into wanting to present the spectrum of dance music – disco, house, funk, jazz, boogie and more – while preserving & paying respect to the vibe of the legendary clubs of Disco’s Golden Age. He strives to keep the proud tradition of the DJ “speaking to the dancer” alive – through the music, lights, and other atmospheric elements of the dancefloor & club.

In 2005, he was chosen as the New Times (SF Weekly/East Bay Express) “DJ Breakthrough” and was invited to play at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami during the Winter Music Conference. In 2006, he was awarded the title of the SF Weekly’s 2006 Music Awards “Best DJ.” Most recently, he was voted BEST DJ in SF Weekly’s 2010 Reader’s Poll! He was also very honored to be invited to represent Go BANG! at the 2011 & 2012 San Francisco Pride festivities, and to DJ at their VIP party in the rotunda of City Hall. He has also recently been able to play at historied San Francisco locations including the Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center & at deYoung Museum.

1) Why do you play music?

I love speaking with my songs. It’s most often easier to express myself with music than words. I’m rather shy, although it seems the opposite. But I try to think about the songs I play as often as possible, tailor a set to tell a story or set a mood, often times through lyrics. Sure, there are times I do strictly party jams, but I’m lucky to be at a point in my life where folks respect my musical voice, so it encourages me to improve, flex my musical vocal chords, so to speak.

2) What do you see as your role in the music world going into the future?

Some day, a few years from now, I hope to make a living as a traveling DJ and producer. I won’t be world-famous but I hope to be famous enough to have my flights paid for, a comfy room or couch to sleep on, and explore the world while sharing of my art and heart with folks. I’m lucky Go BANG! has touched people’s lives, and it’s in no small part because of the DJs who have touched my life, either personally or by paving the way for me. So I hope to be another name in the list of those who is true to our very special art form, to inspire people to be DJs and move the art forward, to make people smile, laugh, cry, and most importantly Dance. Enjoy their life. It’s a special treat being able to give people joy. It’s reciprocal.

3) Favorite label or artist from the past year?

I have so many talented friends, so many folks I idolize. I have to say it’s an honor to be part of San Francisco’s Moulton Music : Chris Lum, Homero Espinosa, Allen Craig (my SyntheTiger partner), David Harness, Ivan Ruiz, Anish Acharya. And if I have to single out one person who represents a truly talented musician, DJ, person :: Philadelphia’s Shawn Ryan. I’d also mention Derek Pavone, but he’s the one interviewing me, and it would be a conflict of interest. 🙂

4) What are you looking forward to most this year?

More fun for myself and Go BANG! I’m looking forward to November 2, when Go BANG! has its monthly party on the same night as we are curating a night at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in association with The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence : Project Nunway 5 :: Dissident Futures! So cool! So exciting!

5) What was your most memorable DJ moment this year (good or bad)?

Each Pride gets more and more special for Go BANG!, Steve & Moi. We are so lucky to have been embraced by the Faerie community in San Francisco. So our Pride Calendar was chock full of memorable events, including a 4AM Set at a play party called Afterglow, the spotlight set at an inspiring Faerie Freedom Village event… just having us and our party be a part of The Community’s events during San Francisco’s Gay Pride, playing gay disco to our gay friends gaying it up! Priceless!
