Nathan Detroit Bio:
With 14+ years experience behind the tables, Portland-based Nathan Detroit has established himself as curator of sleazy and sexy selections for the sweatiest dance floors. As a member of Seattle’s infamous Trashy Trash crew and one half of local party boys Holla ‘N Oates, Mr. Detroit’s diverse approach to his sets and ability to gauge the crowd’s pulse have landed him residencies at Portland’s busiest bars and clubs playing alongside the city’s top DJs as well as opening slots for some of the biggest touring names in the game such as Optimo (Espacio), Morgan Geist, Salvatore Principato (of Liquid Liquid), The Juan Maclean, DJ Assault, Solvent, Lusine, Shlohmo and Flume.
Having held a run of residencies over the past years including D.R.U.M. Club, FUBAR at Branx, STATIC with SubSensory Recordings, Nathan Detroit currently is currently a resident with Booty Bassment at Holocene and Pussy Control (a Prince tribute night) at Dig A Pony, with a steady rotation of monthly gigs in Portland and Seattle.
More after the jump…
Where are you based?: Portland, Oregon
Why do you play music?
I’m a giver, pure and simple. My consumption of music is hardly pedestrian, so deejaying is the perfect outlet to share all the love I have through my own vision, filter and personal narrative. I do my best to scour the record bins – physically and digitally – and find music with a feeling that can move dat ass. Pure and simple.
What do you see as your role in the music world going into the future?
I saw 2012 as the year I hit my stride – a steady stream of mixes flowed on my Soundcloud page, narrowed my focus on taking residencies that truly mattered, landed opening gigs for the bigger acts coming through town, felt more technically sound as a deejay than ever – and I want to keep up that momentum. With the name I’ve made for myself in this town, I plan to further cement my reputation in Portland and elsewhere. In the coming years, I want to make broader connections outside of Portland and get some bookings in other cities. I want to see how other cities get down and to spread the good word. I want to make sure it’s known that when you come out for Nathan Detroit, you’re going to have a damn fun, sweaty time. (And possibly go home pregnant.)
Favorite label or artist from the past year?
Feel My Bicep. You couldn’t have a conversation about the current state of house music without bringing these Irish lads into the fold. They straddle the fine line between retro-fetishism and 90s revivalism while still pushing the music forward. Their Hot Tub Jamz II mix for Rinse.FM was ON REPEAT for days and “Vision Of Love” – their inaugural release on their own label – was a massive tune. Getting to see them at Q Nightclub in Seattle this past March was a real treat. That night was definitely responsible for inspiring this mix.
What are you looking forward to most this year?
Travelling to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival to see R. Kelly, live. Straight up.
