My take: Rhines is a Seattle underground dance music treasure. A transplant from Southern California, where he worked until a few years back with the Ninja Skillz crew and at Simply Jeff’s DJ Culture record store in LA, Rhines (aka SPON.10.80 when he produces tracks) helped found Seattle’s highly respected Innerflight crew with Kadeejah Streets and J-Sun, along with the Flight Deck podcast and Innerflight Music record label. He’s made his primary performance home at Innerflight’s programmatically diverse monthly DROP parties, with Kadeejah, J-Sun and co-residents Manos, Audrey Horne and Night Train, as well as at a number of other events. Innerflight’s DROP party recently re-located from their former home at the LoFi Performance Space to second Saturdays at the Electric Tea Garden, and will be hosting west coast rave legend Jëno from SF’s Wicked crew this weekend, by the way.
Here’s a recent mix of Rhines’ from DROP at ETG, techno & progressive so deep and spacey that I offered to trade DJ names with him and give him mine. Humble almost to a fault, Rhines responded “Oh, I wasn’t sure what I was going to play–it was just something I threw together.” Yeah, yeah. So you can just randomly melt my face with space techno you just threw together. Good for you! I need to go practice now.
Rhines’ music always warps my mind, and reminds the spaceotter of home. Download link at the Mixcloud page.
And seriously, check out Rhines, Kadeejah, J-Sun and Night Train with Jëno this weekend at ETG if you can. I was tempted to cancel a family trip for this but I would get snatched bald-headed so people PLEASE soak up some Wicked + Innerflight vibes for me.
