Karl Kamakahi is one of the gold standards of house music in Seattle. Founder of Seattle’s De La Creme crew, Karl learned to DJ in 1989 in his home Pearl City, Hawaii, taught by legendary Hawaiian DJ James Coles. He began experimenting with freestyle, transitioned into techno, and eventually felt the most at home with house music in the early years of the house movement in 1992. Playing parties and residencies Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco, Portland, Madison, and St. Paul, Karl’s latest efforts in Seattle caught the notice of Brian Lyons and Wesley Holmes of the world-renowned Flammable crew. Karl was asked to join as resident DJ several years ago, and released the first ever mix CD to represent Seattle’s flagship house music party, now the longest running house music night on the west coast, nearly 20 years of house magic.
In Seattle, Karl has played and created terrific parties in venues such as Re-bar, The Woods, The Cuff, Electric Tea Garden, Expansions on KEXP, The Underground, The Baltic Room, Havana, The Monkey Loft. In addition to Flammable Sundays at ReBar, Karl is the creator of Seattle house pillars like Proper at Baltic Room and Soft Option at Monkey Loft.

As a long standing member of the Northwest DJ community, the name ‘Gene Lee’ has become synonymous with quality, forward thinking music. Large venue or small, Gene’s sets are always intimate, heartfelt and his energy on stage is rarely matched. His eclectic taste in electronic grooves has left him on the cutting edge of every genre he plays, making him a long-time favorite of electronic music connoisseurs worldwide.
As a Producer, Gene maintains a very busy schedule. Not limited by genre, Gene’s appreciation for all types of music has given him the ability to work with a variety of artists from wide array of genres. His collaborations with artists include: The Lost Boys, Sean Majors, Donald Glaude, The Lawnchair Generals, Jon Lee and Wesley Holmes.
After spending endless hours in the studio with long time friend, Sean Majors, the two decided to create the record label, Pound Music as a way to output their studio creations. After launching at the beginning of 2007, Pound Music has maintained a steady schedule of releases. By consistently infiltrating playlists and topping the charts of some of the worlds most renowned DJs, Pound Music has made its mark on the global dance music community.
In 2011 Gene Lee partnered up with longtime friend, Wesley Holmes for several collaborations. Their love for the newly evolving genre Nu-Disco prompted them to make a studio mix which encapsulated their favorite songs. “Nu-Phase” generated over 20,000 downloads in a few weeks time and is still popular with Nu-Disco fans today.
Cody Morrison and Carlos Ruiz, aka High & Tight, took us on a really special journey at the January 2015 Bottom Forty (2nd Saturdays at Kremwerk), the feet didn’t leave the floor until 4am. It’s not every DJ that can really set a mood and vibe like this, put together music that plays out more like a story than a beat. Thanks again guys!

Over the course of her 14-year career, Alinka has played alongside a wide array of artists, including: Mark Farina, Jesse Rose, Claude VonStroke, Toro Y Moi, Derrick Carter, DJ Heather, Peaches, Kim Ann Foxman, Crystal Castles and countless others. In 2013 she and Shaun J. Wright started their monthly residency Twirl at Berlin Nightclub in Chicago. The party has since featured guests such as: Derrick Carter, DJ Heather, Eli Escobar, Lauren Flax, JD Samson, and The Carry Nation. In addition Alinka is currently a resident at the successful party, Nü: The Outer Space Disco Dancing Society of Chicago at Neo.
The last two years have been particularly fruitful and rewarding for Alinka, due in large part to her friendship and musical partnership with singer, producer and DJ, Shaun J. Wright. Wright, whose rich, resonant voice has lended soul to music by Hercules and Love Affair, and Stereogamous, met Alinka in 2012 and the two instantly bonded over their love of Chicago House music. It wasn’t long before their evolving friendship resulted in what would be the first of many musical collaborations. Their first EP, “Twirl Vol.1,” was promptly signed to Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s esteemed house label, Classic Music Co. The EP went on to be lauded by the likes of Chris Duckenfield, Tensnake, Joyce Muniz, Hannah Holland, Doc Martin, Simon Baker, and many more. The release was followed by a 12” remix compilation with remixes from Derrick Carter, Neville Watson and Chris E. Pants. The EP’s lead single, “Love Inspired,” was featured on Defected Records Compilation “Defected Presents The Closing Party Ibiza 2013,” as well as Defected’s In The House Radio show. In addition, Alinka and Wright have collaborated on a plethora of remixes for Hi Fashion, The Carry Nation, JD Samson & MEN, and Baby Alpaca. The pair also recently completed “Twirl Vol. 2” for Classic Music Company which will be out early 2015.
Wright and Alinka recently launched their label Twirl Recordings. Their first release titled “Journey Into The Deep” features remixes by Kim Ann Foxman, and Stereogamous, and received support from a wide variety of artists including Groove Armada, Danny Tenaglia, Kenny Glasgow, Annie Mac, Robert Owens, Matt Toldfrey, and many more. The EP got DJ Mag’s approval with a 9.0 rating, and was also featured on Annie Mac’s show on BBC Radio 1 dance radio.

DJ Chris Camplin is a resident of Handsome which is monthly party at East Bloc, London. Chris is a classically trained pianist whose stylistic roots go back to the drum and bass, garage, house & techno of the late nineties, where artists as diverse as Jeff Mills, Masters at Work, DJ Hype and Zed Bias provided the soundtrack to his formative years. During his teens Christopher was deeply involved with London’s underground club scene – where he carried out promotional work for Trade, DTPM and Nag Nag Nag. He was influenced by the disco revival as pioneered by Horse Meat Disco, and his love of house and techno matured as he travelled to Ibiza’s infamous DC10, Space, Bora Bora and Berlin’s Berghain where he heard a complexity of dance music that inspired him to become a DJ. He has now played gigs in Berlin, Spain & Italy, Secret Garden Party, LoveBox & Eastern Electrics.

A while back we asked one of our favorite selectors Eugene Tambourine to edit Lyn Collins’ Rock Me Again and he exceeded all of our expectations. We’ve been sitting on this edit for a while and have occasionally dropped it as our last track of the night. Judging by the reaction on the dance floor, ET has nailed this one.
The original track is about 3.5 minutes but 2.5 into it, the song abruptly ends with a boing sound then restarts. It’s an odd production that really disrupts the energy of the track. ET thankfully removed that strange interruption and extended the track in a true to the sound fashion. Here for the first time is an exlusive download of ET’s edit, please enjoy!

How does one get from point A to point B? For West Coast producer and DJ, Vin Sol, it’s been a linear progression. When Sol began to build his collection, he jumped in head first, hitting swap meets in Oakland California searching for anything soulful or rhythmic. Armed with stacks of soul 45’s and funk LPs it became evident that it was time to do something with all these gems. With the cash made from local DJ gigs Sol threw down and got his first sampler and began to chop away adding the Roland TR-909 to his arsenal in the process.
Slowly his attention shifted away from soul and funk towards Disco, House, Techno and Italo. The need to expand his collection landed him in New York City where his crates and production began to grow as well as his love for House and Techno music. In shops like A1 Records Sol’s taste for stripped back, raw, emotional House and Techno began to dilate. Sol knew it was time to build a proper studio to make and release music that was rooted in the records and gear of the past while still maintaining a futuristic yet stripped back feel. That vision became Soo Wavey Records that was birthed with comrade Matrixxman. In 2013, Sol broke out with a myriad of 12″ singles beginning with Edges Of A Vortex on a split 12″ with Drexciyan DJ Stingray. “Edges” received spins from the likes of Bodikka, Kevin Saunderson, Serge from Clone, and Waze and Odyssey with its heavy Chicago vibes and raw drum machine grit. That was followed by 2 white label 12″ remix releases with Matrixxman of the high priestess of Balearic soul, Sade. These 12″s received play from a wide spectrum of top dj’s from Seth Troxler to HNNY, showing an ability to make stripped back jacking house to sultry soulful house. Next up was his 12″ It’s House featuring Chicago House pioneer Tyree Cooper, which garnered support from the likes of the legendary Larry Heard, Len Faki, Gerd, and Sasha.

Bottom Forty: Why do you play music?
Vin Sol: I have been djing wax since the late 90’s before that I was making pause mix cassettes. I have aways loved sharing new and odd music, and at the same time I am collector so it just works for me.
BF: What do you see as your role in the music world going into the future?
VS: My role is to share music and positive experiences. I am lucky to have my label with Matrixxman, it is the perfect vehicle to do that.
BF: Favorite label or artist from the past year?
VS: Clone, Delft, L.I.E.S, Mood Hut, Trilogy Tapes, Local Talk and countless others, we are living in a great time for dance music there are endless jams to be had!!!
BF: What are you looking forward to most this year?
VS: I have a couple rad records coming out in the next couple months so that has me juiced and of course coming up to bang the box with the Bottom Forty crew.
